Chitika is the latest ad company, and they have got pretty cool new stuff for you. Depending on your site you can make nice money, just read on and I tell you how it works!

Chitika is the latest ad company to count with and they have some new interesting ideas, that might be able to make you some money.

Their ads are similiar in some ways with adsense and ypn, but very different at the same time.
You can setup your ads to work like adsense, so you get targetted ads automaticly depending on the content of the site.

Most people don’t do that for some reasons. One is that sometimes you know your visitors better than the ad company does. The other reason is that if you run chitika together with adsense ads, you are not allowed to run them in “contextual mode”. (No worry, by default contextual is turned off).

To be sure, look for this row in your ad code: ch_non_contextual = 1;

This is what a typical Chitika ad looks like. I have set up it to show ads about: Digital cameras, ipod shuffle and sony playstation.

Choose your product area

Let’s say you have a site about xbox. Then you might want to show adsabout xbox and psp. That is no problems with Chitika. You just use their website and enter the words you like ads about. You can actually choose to show ads about flowers or something else that is not that interesting :-) If you choose many words, they will be randomly displayed.

Good to know is that Chitika works absolutely best for web sites about a product. But it’s just to try for you, it works great for other kinds of sites also!

Ad formats and colors

Chitika have lots of different ad formats to choose from. They have the standard IAB formats, but they have also got some special once for bloggers. They have popunder, which I haven’t tested yet but it might work great for some sites.

You are free to change the colors for your ads in any way. Use the web site or change directly in the ad code. The tool is good but not that good lucking if you know what I meen :-) But it does the job!

Good things

Some good things about Chitika are:

  • You can choose from lots of different formats and change the colors very freely
  • Lots of formats so you can always find good spots for the ads
  • Great for product sites, but also for other sites because you can choose your own words.
  • Perfect complement to adsense/YPN/other companies without cutting the revenue from those streams. Even if you run CPM ads with Fastclick you can run Chitika and make the same amount of money with Fastclick.
  • They pay the same money even if your visitors are of bad quality. Adsense use “smart pricing” which often lower the cpc after a month of activity on a site.

Some not so good things

  • The admin area is old fashion and looks really boring and unprofessional.
  • The stats are only updated about 12 hours late.
  • Good or bad, I don’t know… but they audit your account activity after every month and cut about 10% in average. This is probably because they check their own results and fix up problems

Summary

Chitika is a good company that is worth trying. It can make a big difference for your website revenues, but it can also only make small extra money. It all depends on your site and how you integrate the ads.
